Today we have 100 essential business verbs.

As before, check the list for words you do not know or are not sure about (be honest with yourself).

Pick 5 or 10 of these words, then use an online dictionary to find or clarify the meaning of the word.

Now write 5 or 10 sentences using each of the words. Try to write sentences that demonstrate the definition of the word, by their context.

Our second look at Presentation Skills for today: sign posting.

What is sign posting? Sign posting are key words or expressions that you use to indicate the different parts of your presentation and what you are doing at that part. For example:

When you want to change to the next point: 'Moving on to the next point'

When you want to give more details about a particular point: 'I'd like to expand more on this...'

Once again this exercise gives you different choices of expression. As I have said before, you don't need to use all of them. You only need to use the ones you like or feel best suit your style of English.

This excellent resource, provided by www.better-english.com, comes with a series of support exercises at the bottom of the page. If you have the time, it's a good idea to try one or two of them. It will help you to remember how to use the expressions.

However the best way to learn is to put new vocabulary straight into practice: try adding some of the phrases your a presentation you're working on or even just an email. A lot of these phrases will also work in the different business contexts.

A change of pace for today: no quiz, but a some quick tips about CV writing in English.

In my experience, the English / American method of CV writing is quite different from, certainly, the European method. It is important to consider not only changing the language of your CV, but also the style.

As with any piece of advice I would take these CV writing tips as a suggestion, rather than the absolute truth. I think it's important to take new information and add it to your existing knowledge, rather than replacing it totally.

Business English Expressions are in no way essential for English learners. Like all idiomatic expressions, they're a matter of choice. It's absolutely acceptable to work in an English speaking environment using good, solid technical English.

However, Business English Expressions do help colour your language. They will bring some character to your English, and allow you to personalise your English a little.

As with all 'option vocabulary', it is not necessary to learn every single expression: use the expressions you like.

Today's Business English link is related to Presentation Skills: Starting a Presentation.

Here you have a collection of different phrases you might like to use in order to get people's attention, welcome them, introduce yourself, state the purpose of your presentation and state how you want to deal with questions.

When faced with a lot of choices, the important thing to remember is to choose the phrases you like! Don't feel obliged to learn all of them, if you don't want to. Select the phrases that you feel suit your business area and your personal business style the best.

It is useful to be able to comprehend all the phrases (when you hear them in another person's presentation), but you only need to use the ones that feel right for you.
