Presentation Skills - Sign Posting

Our second look at Presentation Skills for today: sign posting.

What is sign posting?  Sign posting are key words or expressions that you use to indicate the different parts of your presentation and what you are doing at that part.  For example:

  • When you want to change to the next point:  'Moving on to the next point'
  • When you want to give more details about a particular point: 'I'd like to expand more on this...'

Once again this exercise gives you different choices of expression.  As I have said before, you don't need to use all of them.  You only need to use the ones you like or feel best suit your style of English.

This excellent resource, provided by www.better-english.com, comes with a series of support exercises at the bottom of the page.  If you have the time, it's a good idea to try one or two of them.  It will help you to remember how to use the expressions.

However the best way to learn is to put new vocabulary straight into practice:  try adding some of the phrases your a presentation you're working on or even just an email.  A lot of these phrases will also work in the different business contexts.

If you missed the first presentation skill post, you can find it here.  Or you can simply use the 'search by labels' option on the side menu (to the right of this text and near the bottom).
