100 Essential Business Verbs

On Friday 27 November, we had 100 essential business nouns

Today we have 100 essential business verbs.

As before, check the list for words you do not know or are not sure about (be honest with yourself).

Pick 5 or 10 of these words, then use an online dictionary to find or clarify the meaning of the word.

Now write 5 or 10 sentences using each of the words.  Try to write sentences that demonstrate the definition of the word, by their context.

*If you have any problems finding or understanding the definition of a particular word, you can always ask me on my English Language Answers Blog.  Just email me at answers@ondemandenglishsupport.com.

Business English: Describing Graphs

For today: describing graphs.

This type of vocabulary is not particularly difficult, but it is a little specific.  It's not hard to use once you know it, but you do need to know it first.

Use the words at the top of the page to fill in the gaps.  Then press 'answer' to find out if you've got each individual question correct.

Business Vocabulary Quiz: Talking about Sickness

I've been ill for the past two weeks!  Let's practice talking about illness.

Choose the correct word to complete the expressions.  Each one is related to being unwell.

I am, for example, as sick as a dog, as white as a sheet, feeling like death warmed up, on death's door and, very much, under the weather.

Business English Expressions - Part 3

For today: another set of Business English Expressions.

Once again a multi-choice quiz for you all to try.

This type of vocabulary is very much a matter of choice.  If you find expressions you like, you might want to use them to 'colour' your English and make it more personal to you.

However you do not need to use every single expression, if you don't want to.

Grammar: Choose the Right Article

Some grammar for today: Choose the Right Article.

Choose the correct choice from three to complete the sentences.  Then click 'check answers' at the bottom of the page to find out how well you've done!

This exercise is more suited for intermediate and advanced speakers.  In my opinion the article is not as important for beginners, because it does not usually effect communication.

There are more important factors for beginners to concentrate on.

Tuesday 17 November 2009

Human Resources: Phrases & Expressions

For today: expressions and phrases related to Human Resources.

Choose the correct word (from a selection of 4) to complete the sentences, then check your answers at the bottom by clicking 'evaluate'.

This vocabulary is not just limited to people working in Human Resources.  I think a lot of it will be useful for everyone.

Telephone English - Language & Phrases

Some more telephone phrases for today.

Once again, the exercise gives you a range of phrases to use.  It is important that you choose the phrases you like, the phrases you feel comfortable with.

One idea to help you learn the phrases: print out the list and have it on your desk.  After the first month, you probably will not need the list anymore.

*If you want to see the previous telephone exercise, you can find it here.  You can also use the "search by labels" option at the bottom of the sidebar.

Presentation Skills - Sign Posting

Our second look at Presentation Skills for today: sign posting.

What is sign posting?  Sign posting are key words or expressions that you use to indicate the different parts of your presentation and what you are doing at that part.  For example:

  • When you want to change to the next point:  'Moving on to the next point'
  • When you want to give more details about a particular point: 'I'd like to expand more on this...'

Once again this exercise gives you different choices of expression.  As I have said before, you don't need to use all of them.  You only need to use the ones you like or feel best suit your style of English.

This excellent resource, provided by www.better-english.com, comes with a series of support exercises at the bottom of the page.  If you have the time, it's a good idea to try one or two of them.  It will help you to remember how to use the expressions.

However the best way to learn is to put new vocabulary straight into practice:  try adding some of the phrases your a presentation you're working on or even just an email.  A lot of these phrases will also work in the different business contexts.

If you missed the first presentation skill post, you can find it here.  Or you can simply use the 'search by labels' option on the side menu (to the right of this text and near the bottom).

Business English Vocabulary: Economics & Finance Quiz

Another quiz for today: Economics & Finance Words.

This one is quite difficult, because it doesn't give you a choice of words.  The important thing is to try and remember, even if you're getting some of the answers wrong, you're still learning!

How to Write a CV in English

A change of pace for today: no quiz, but a some quick tips about CV writing in English.

In my experience, the English / American method of CV writing is quite different from, certainly, the European method.  It is important to consider not only changing the language of your CV, but also the style.

As with any piece of advice I would take these CV writing tips as a suggestion, rather than the absolute truth.  I think it's important to take new information and add it to your existing knowledge, rather than replacing it totally.

Business English Expressions

For today: Business English Expressions.

Business English Expressions are in no way essential for English learners.  Like all idiomatic expressions, they're a matter of choice.  It's absolutely acceptable to work in an English speaking environment using good, solid technical English.

However, Business English Expressions do help colour your language.  They will bring some character to your English, and allow you to personalise your English a little.

As with all 'option vocabulary', it is not necessary to learn every single expression: use the expressions you like.

Telephone English

Hello Hello,

Let's start the week with a little bit of telephone English.  All of these phrases are used in a business context.

Telephone English is actually not too bad you just need to know a few key phrases. It's all a bit generic and a bit boring.

Presentation Skills - Starting

Good Morning!

Today's Business English link is related to Presentation Skills:  Starting a Presentation.

Here you have a collection of different phrases you might like to use in order to get people's attention, welcome them, introduce yourself, state the purpose of your presentation and state how you want to deal with questions.

When faced with a lot of choices, the important thing to remember is to choose the phrases you like!  Don't feel obliged to learn all of them, if you don't want to.  Select the phrases that you feel suit your business area and your personal business style the best.

It is useful to be able to comprehend all the phrases (when you hear them in another person's presentation), but you only need to use the ones that feel right for you.

Toodles!
